The experience

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park protects the largest remaining mangrove forest in Zanzibar and the red colobus monkeys found nowhere else on earth. Your guide takes you through the forest canopy first, pointing out vegetation and the monkeys themselves, then explains the characteristics that set this species apart. You get time to photograph them and the surrounding plant life before moving to the second part of the tour.

The mangrove boardwalk is a raised wooden path that lets you walk into the mangrove ecosystem without disturbing it. Your guide explains how mangroves work: their root systems, their role in the coastal environment, and the animals that depend on them. The boardwalk keeps you dry and gives you a close view of the water and the trees. The whole tour runs three to four hours and includes private air-conditioned transport to and from your hotel.
