The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive to Mnemba atoll, a marine conservation area where the snorkeling reaches what the operator calls one of the most frequented spots in the world. The underwater landscape (untouched coral gardens, deep crevasses, and schools of reef fish) is what draws most travelers here, though dolphins show up often enough that they're worth watching for. You're in the water for as long as the guide judges safe. Bring a swimsuit and sunscreen, and know that entry and exit happen from a boat.
After snorkeling, the tour moves inland to Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, a tropical forest reserve built around a high-density groundwater ecosystem. The main draw is the red colobus monkey, a species found nowhere else on earth except Zanzibar, and the guide will point them out in the canopy. You'll also walk through mangrove swamp and mangrove forest (the operator lists this as one of Zanzibar's highlights), and may spot black sykes monkeys or bush babies depending on the hour and season. The forest is dense and humid. The path is walkable but uneven in places.
Kuza Cave comes next: an ancient limestone cavern with a circular opening that floods the interior with light. A freshwater pool sits inside, crystal clear and cool enough to swim in. The cave has a shaded reception area outside, so there's a place to rest and dry off before the final stop. The Rock Restaurant sits on a coral rock at the shoreline, and the operator notes that if you want lunch or a drink there, you'll need to make your own reservation through their website beforehand. It's not part of the tour booking.
The whole day runs nine hours from pickup to drop-off. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language, chosen when you book. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the operator provides fruit, water and transportation. Children from age six are welcome.
