Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Zanzibar's marine and cultural sites
- Visit Blue Lagoon atoll and Michamvi Beach
- Snorkel with starfish at Coral Garden
- Enjoy seafood lunch at The Rock Restaurant
- Explore Kuza Cave and swim in fresh water
- Swim with sea turtles in Salaam Cave
The experience
The day starts at your hotel with pickup and transport to Michamvi Beach, where the snorkeling begins in the Blue Lagoon atoll and the Coral Garden. Both sites sit in shallow water where starfish move across the seabed: the highlight for families with young children, since you can stand and watch without deep diving. The Indian Ocean here stays clear enough to see the creatures without strain, and snorkeling gear is provided.
Midday brings a break at The Rock Restaurant in Michamvi Pingwe for a seafood lunch: fresh lobster, calamari, octopus, crabs, shrimps and fish of the day prepared in Swahili style. The meal is pre-booked at noon, so the timing is set. After lunch, the tour moves inland to Kuza Cave, where you swim in a freshwater pool inside the cave itself and walk past local artifacts and a timeline of Swahili history: the operator frames it as a journey back to how humans originated in East Africa. The cave sits in jungle, so the atmosphere shifts from open water to enclosed and quiet.
The final stop is Salaam Cave, where the snorkeling changes again: the water here is deep and clear, and sea turtles glide through the coral reefs. This is the only site where you encounter the animals rather than the landscape, and it closes the day with a different kind of encounter than the starfish shallows. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group between all four stops, and the full day runs nine hours from pickup to return.

What's the difference between the starfish snorkeling at Blue Lagoon and the sea turtles at Salaam Cave?
Blue Lagoon and the Coral Garden are shallow-water sites where starfish rest on the seabed in clear water. You can stand and watch them without diving, which works well for children and swimmers who prefer to stay upright. Salaam Cave has deeper, open water where sea turtles swim through coral reefs, so you're snorkeling in a different depth and watching a different animal in its own habitat.
Is lunch at The Rock Restaurant included, and what if I don't want to eat seafood?
Lunch at The Rock is included in this tour and is pre-booked at noon. The menu is seafood: lobster, calamari, octopus, crabs, shrimps and fish of the day prepared in Swahili style. If you prefer not to eat there, you can arrange a different option at checkout.
Do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear, or is it provided?
Snorkeling gear is provided for the Blue Lagoon and Coral Garden sites. Bring a swimsuit and towel. The tour supplies the mask, fins and snorkel.
How long is the full day, and what time does pickup happen?
The tour runs nine hours from hotel pickup to return. Pickup times depend on your hotel location on Zanzibar. Confirm the exact time when you book.
