3-Day Village Stay in Arusha: Cook, Milk Cows, Fetch Water
Live as a Maasai villager for three days, not as a tourist passing through
A 3-day village stay in Arusha puts you in a Maasai family home in Likamba, where you cook traditional meals, milk cows and goats, fetch water with a donkey, collect firewood, and take cattle to pasture alongside your hosts. You sleep in either a traditional or modern Maasai home, eat what the family eats, and end each day watching Mount Meru at sunset. Accommodation and all meals are included. A local guide named Doreen leads the experience.

The experience
What separates this from a day visit is the stay itself. You arrive after 2 PM on day one, check out before 11 AM on day three, and live inside the rhythm of the village the whole time, not watching it from a distance. Likamba Homestay connects you with one of ten local families who open their homes. The activities are what people actually do: milking cows and goats in the morning, fetching water with a donkey, collecting firewood from the bush, taking cattle to pasture, visiting the local market. You cook alongside your hosts, eat the meals they prepare, and sleep in their home. If you stay longer, you can swap families to see how different households work.
The setup is intentionally non-touristy. Some homestays have simple facilities (no frills, no resort amenities), because the point is to live as locals do, not to be served as a guest. Doreen, your English-speaking guide, is there to help you understand what is happening and to bridge any gaps, but the real teachers are the families themselves. Breakfast is included on days two and three. Lunch and dinner come every day except your arrival and departure days, when meal timing shifts. You can reschedule your stay once for free up to ten days before, as long as new dates fall within two months and availability allows.
Optional activities available on-site (traditional dancing, making Maasai beadwork, crafting Maasai garments, or a visit to a Maasai boma with Loshoro tasting) can be arranged and paid separately after you arrive. Transfers from Arusha city center, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, or Arusha Airport are available on request once you book.

Is this one for you? This stay works best for travelers who want to live alongside a family rather than observe from the outside, and who are comfortable with simple facilities and a day structured around actual village work rather than scheduled activities. If you're booking solo or as a couple, you'll be integrated into one family's home. If you're staying longer than three days, you can experience multiple families and get a fuller picture of how different households operate.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 12 years): free; Infant (under 5).
What do I actually do each day in the village?
Your days revolve around the family's routine: milking cows and goats, fetching water with a donkey, collecting firewood, taking cattle to pasture, cooking local meals together, and visiting the market. There is no fixed schedule. You work alongside your hosts as they work, so the rhythm changes day to day.
Do I sleep in a traditional Maasai home or a modern one?
Likamba Homestay offers both traditional and modern Maasai homes. Which one you stay in depends on availability and your preference. You can discuss this when you book.
What meals are included, and when do I eat?
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included during your stay, except breakfast is not served on your arrival day and lunch and dinner are not served on your departure day. You eat what the family cooks, sharing their meals.
Can I visit a Maasai boma or learn beadwork while I'm there?
Yes, several activities are available on-site but not included in the base price: traditional dancing costs 5,000 TZS per person, making Maasai beadwork (shanga) costs 10,000 TZS per bracelet or necklace, and a visit to a Maasai boma with Loshoro tasting costs 10,000 TZS per person. You can arrange and pay for any of these after you arrive.
What if I need to change my dates after booking?
You can reschedule once for free up to ten days before your stay, as long as your new dates fall within two months and the family has availability.
