The experience
What does it actually mean to stay with a Tanzanian family instead of checking into a hotel? At Ngulelo Homestay, you're not a guest passing through. You're part of the household for three days. Godson and his family welcome you into their Arusha home, a comfort-standard property with a peaceful courtyard. You get two or three rooms depending on your group size, and the rhythm of the days follows what the family does: cooking lessons happen in the kitchen, Swahili happens at the table, and the market visit means going where locals shop, not where tourists are herded.
The activities are built into ordinary life. You'll cook local dishes from scratch, learning the ingredients and techniques as you prepare meals you'll eat together. Market visits aren't guided tours. You're buying groceries for dinner. If there's a school visit happening, you go. If the neighborhood has an event, you're invited. Sunday brings a church service if you're there. Godson speaks English and German, so language isn't a barrier to understanding what's happening or asking why things work the way they do. He has Maasai roots and decades of guiding experience, which means he can answer the questions that actually matter to someone trying to understand a place.
Check-in is after 2 PM on your arrival day, and checkout is before 11 AM on your last morning. You can reschedule once for free up to ten days before your stay, with new dates within two months, subject to availability. Transfers from Arusha City Center, JRO Airport, or ARK Airport can be arranged on request after you book.

Is this one for you? This homestay suits travelers who want to spend time with one family rather than move between hotels, and who are comfortable learning by doing: cooking in a real kitchen, shopping at a real market, joining whatever is happening in the neighborhood that day. If you prefer structured tours with set itineraries and multiple sites, a traditional tour will fit better.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and German.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 12 years): free; Infant (under 5).
What will I actually cook during the three days?
You'll prepare traditional Tanzanian dishes with Godson's family in their kitchen, learning the local ingredients and methods as you cook meals you'll share together. The specific dishes depend on what's seasonal and what the family is making during your stay.
Is this a real family home or a guesthouse set up to feel like one?
Ngulelo Homestay is Godson's actual family home in Arusha, with a comfortable courtyard and rooms built to a high standard. You're staying in the house where the family lives, not in a separate tourist building.
What's the market visit like, will I be shopping alone or with Godson?
You'll go to the market with Godson and his family to buy groceries for meals you're cooking together. It's a working visit, not a sightseeing tour, so you see how locals actually shop and what's available in season.
Can I add a Maasai cultural experience or the goat BBQ to my stay?
Yes, both are available as optional extras. The Maasai experience includes a visit to a Maasai boma, beading, traditional clothing, house plastering, music and movement. The goat BBQ option means you visit the market, select and purchase a goat and groceries, then prepare and cook it together.
