The experience

Mount Meru stands at 4,566 m and carries the marks of a volcanic eruption 250,000 years ago that blew away its entire eastern flank, leaving the mountain with a distinctive half-cone shape. The trek climbs through distinct vegetation zones as altitude increases: dry forest gives way to dense rainforest, then heather and moorland, and finally alpine terrain near the summit. Wildlife changes with the landscape: giraffes and buffaloes appear in the grasslands of the lower slopes, while colobus monkeys inhabit the forest canopy higher up. An armed park ranger is mandatory and walks with you throughout, both for safety and to point out the animals and plants you pass.

Day one takes you from Momella Gate (1,500 m) to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m) in roughly four hours of walking, with a rest at Maio Falls and a stop at the fig tree arch. Day two climbs steeply through rainforest to Saddle Hut (3,550 m), passing the vantage point called Mgongo wa Tembo (elephant back) at 3,200 m. An optional afternoon hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) offers views of Arusha National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro about 80 km away. Day three is the summit push: you leave Saddle Hut just after midnight, walk by headlamp through bushland to Rhino Point (3,821 m), then continue on volcanic ash and rock along the crater rim for four to five hours to reach Socialist Peak. You watch the sunrise over Kilimanjaro from the summit, see the crater's steep sides and ash cone, then descend the same route back to Saddle Hut for soup and tea, and continue down to Miriakamba Hut. Day four is the descent: a two- to three-hour trek back to Momella Gate on the northern route, where you may spot elephants and more wildlife before your driver returns you to Arusha.

Private transportation from your Arusha hotel is included, along with all meals during the trek. The huts provide basic mountain accommodation and hot water for washing. Children from age five can join, and the trek suits all fitness levels, though the altitude gain and early-morning summit push demand steady effort and acclimatization.

What’s included

  • Private transportation from your Arusha hotel.
  • an armed park ranger for all four days.
  • accommodation in mountain huts at Miriakamba and Saddle.
  • all meals during the trek.
