The experience

The day starts with a boat departure from Lucerne across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau, a journey that sets the pace for everything that follows. From Vitznau, you board the cogwheel train (Europe's first, built in 1871), and climb toward Mount Rigi's summit. The train does the work. You watch the forests thin and the view expand as the altitude rises. At Rigi Kulm, the top, you have an hour to move around. Some people walk the marked trails that radiate from the station. Others sit with a meal at one of the restaurants there and watch the Alps and the lakes spread out below. The guide stays with the group and can point out which peaks are which.

The descent is different from the ascent. You walk down from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Staffel, a gentler stretch through alpine meadows, where lunch happens at a restaurant with views of the surrounding mountains. After eating, a short walk takes you to Rigi Kaltbad, where the aerial cableway begins. The cable car floats you down toward Weggis, suspended above the forests and the lake shore. From Weggis, the final leg is a 40-minute boat ride back to Lucerne, which gives you time to sit and let the day settle.
