Three Alpine transport methods in one day: cogwheel train, aerial cable car, and lake boat.

A private guided tour from Lucerne that takes you up Mt. Pilatus by cogwheel train and dragon cable car, across the summit at 2,132 meters, down the world's steepest rack railway, and back by first-class cruise on Lake Lucerne. Hotel pickup is included, and your guide speaks English or Spanish. The route runs six hours and covers the Pilatus Railways, Fraukmuntegg stop, and the lake's four-canton views.

  • Descend via steep cogwheel train

The Experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel and drives you to the Pilatus Bahn station in Lucerne. From there, the day unfolds across three linked journeys: first, the cogwheel train climbs the foothills to Fraukmuntegg, where you stop to see the Alpine landscape and learn how the Swiss cantons formed in 1291. Then comes the iconic dragon cable car—a giant glass cabin that floats 360 degrees around you as you rise toward the summit, the windowed walls turning the ascent itself into the view.

At the top of Mt. Pilatus, you're standing at 2,132 meters with a choice: stay at the restaurant and absorb the panorama of Lucerne, the surrounding lakes, and the peaks rolling away in every direction, or take a leisurely hike to the actual summit and hear your guide explain the legends of dragons and the disputed resting place of Pontius Pilate that haunt this mountain. The descent uses the world's steepest cogwheel railway, dropping you to Alpnachstad while your guide points out the history and culture of each area you pass.

The final leg is a first-class cruise back across Lake Lucerne—also called the lake of four cantons—where you see Bürgenstock, Rigi Mountain, and Pilatus receding from the water. From May through October, you have the option to take the boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad instead of the cogwheel train down, which reverses the sequence but keeps the same three transport types. Your guide returns you to your hotel at the end of the day.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you're staying in Lucerne without a car—hotel pickup means you don't arrange transport to the station, and the guide handles the sequence of three different cable cars, trains and boats so the day holds together as a single route instead of separate bookings.

The dragon cable car is a giant glass cabin with 360-degree windowed walls that floats you up the mountainside, giving you views in every direction as you rise toward the summit. Many visitors compare the experience to flying.

Can I hike to the summit of Mt. Pilatus, or is it just viewing platforms?

You can choose to hike to the actual summit of Mt. Pilatus after arriving at the top, or stay at the restaurant and view platform if you prefer. Your guide can lead a leisurely hike if you want to reach the peak itself.

Is lunch included in this tour?

Lunch is not included, but you have time at the summit to eat at the restaurant there, and the tour includes a first-class cruise on Lake Lucerne where you can purchase food and drinks.

What is the world's steepest cogwheel railway, and where does it go?

The cogwheel train descending Mt. Pilatus is the world's steepest rack railway, climbing at grades up to 48 percent. It takes you from the summit down to Alpnachstad, where you board the lake cruise back to Lucerne.

Does this tour visit Lucerne itself, or only Mt. Pilatus and the lake?

The tour includes hotel pickup in Lucerne and departs from the Pilatus Bahn station in the city, but the main focus is Mt. Pilatus and Lake Lucerne. An optional Lucerne city visit can be arranged upon request.

How long is the full tour, and what time does it start?
