Mount Pilatus summit from Lucerne: train, gondola & cruise
Three ways up and down a 7,000-foot Alpine peak, ending on the water
This half-day tour from Lucerne combines a 30-minute panoramic gondola ride to Fräkmüntegg, an aerial cable car ascent to Mount Pilatus's 7,000-foot summit, a descent aboard the world's steepest cogwheel train, and a one-hour boat cruise across Lake Lucerne. A professional guide in English leads the group; transportation, all mountain rides and the lake cruise are included. Free time at the summit lets you rest on the sun terrace, hike the Dragon's Path, or grab lunch (at your own cost). From mid-October through late November, the itinerary shifts to cogwheel train ascent and descent with no boat ride, though a lunch voucher is added.

The Experience
You meet your guide in central Lucerne in the early afternoon and travel by coach to Kriens, at the base of Mount Pilatus. The first ascent is a 30-minute panoramic gondola ride to Fräkmüntegg, where the views open across rolling hills and pine forests below. From there, you board the aerial cable car—a modern cabin with panoramic windows—for the final climb to the summit at 7,000 feet. The Alpine peaks and lakes spread out in every direction from the top.
Your time on the summit is unscheduled. Some travelers sit on the expansive sun terrace; others walk the Dragon's Path or take a short hike around the peak. Food and drinks are available for purchase at the summit restaurant. The descent is the signature moment: you ride the world's steepest cogwheel train down to Alpnachstad, dropping past mountain streams and rock faces toward green meadows. The gradient is steep enough that the train feels like it is falling downhill.
The tour closes with a one-hour boat cruise across Lake Lucerne, returning to the city by water. You see the same Alpine scenery from an entirely different angle—the peaks and shoreline from the lake itself. The boat brings you back to Lucerne in the late afternoon. Note that from mid-October through late November, the gondola and cable car rides are replaced with cogwheel train ascent and descent, and the boat cruise does not run; a lunch voucher up to 20 CHF is included instead. The tour operates year-round but the route changes with the season.

Is this one for you? Most Mount Pilatus tours from Lucerne stick to one route up and one route down. This one uses three different mountain systems—gondola, cable car and cogwheel train—so you experience the peak from multiple angles and the descent is the most dramatic part of the day, not a repeat of the climb.

What's the physical fitness level needed for this Mount Pilatus tour from Lucerne?
The tour requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. Most of the ascent and descent happen by cable car and cogwheel train, so you are not climbing on foot, but the altitude (7,000 feet) and the free time at the summit—which may include a short hike on the Dragon's Path—mean you should be comfortable at height and able to walk uneven terrain.
Can I bring young children or a baby on this tour?
Yes. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available. Service animals are also allowed. The coach, gondola, cable car and cogwheel train all accommodate families with young children.
What exactly is the world's steepest cogwheel train?
The cogwheel train from Mount Pilatus down to Alpnachstad is the world's steepest cogwheel railway, with a gradient that makes the descent feel nearly vertical as you drop past waterfalls and rock faces toward the meadows below. It is a single-track train engineered to grip the rails on extreme slopes.
Is lunch included in this tour?
Lunch is not included in the standard tour, but food and drinks are available for purchase at the Mount Pilatus summit restaurant. From mid-October through late November, a lunch voucher up to 20 CHF is provided instead of the boat cruise.
How long is the boat ride on Lake Lucerne?
The boat cruise across Lake Lucerne lasts one hour and concludes the tour. It runs until mid-October; from mid-October through late November, the boat ride is replaced with cogwheel train descent and a lunch voucher.
What's included in the tour price?
The tour includes transportation by air-conditioned coach from Lucerne, the panoramic gondola ride to Fräkmüntegg, the aerial cable car to the summit, the cogwheel train descent to Alpnachstad, and the one-hour boat cruise on Lake Lucerne (until mid-October). A professional English-speaking guide leads the group throughout. Hotel pickup and gratuities are not included.
