The Experience

You meet your guide at Pier No. 1 in Lucerne and board a boat for a relaxing cruise across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau. The water route gives you the first view of the Alps rising from the shoreline, and the crossing sets the pace for the day — no rushing, no driving.

At Vitznau, you transfer to the cogwheel train, the same type of railway that opened in 1871 and still carries visitors to Rigi Kulm, the summit. The train climbs at a steady grade, and from your seat you watch the lake recede and the Alpine panorama expand. At the top, you have free time to walk the hiking trails, visit the mountain chapel, or eat at one of the restaurants. If you want to move, an easy 2-kilometer trail with a gentle slope leads to the Känzeli viewing platform, a second vantage point for the 360-degree view of the ranges.

The descent begins by cogwheel train again, but only as far as Rigi Kaltbad, a car-free village where you can walk the village square and see the Mineralbad & Spa, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta. From there, an aerial cable car carries you down toward Lake Lucerne, and a short downhill walk brings you to Weggis, the boat station Mark Twain called the "most charming place" in 1897. You board the final boat back to Lucerne, watching the Lucerne Riviera slip past as you relax.
