The Experience

We were already halfway across Lake Lucerne before I realized how quiet it was out there—just the soft chug of the boat and a breeze that smelled faintly like wet stone and wood. It’s cooler up top; I zipped my jacket and tried not to look down when we crossed a particularly steep patch. There’s no guide here, but honestly, everyone seems to know what they’re doing—locals chatting in dialect, hikers with sticks, one guy carrying a loaf of bread wrapped in paper.

I wandered around for maybe half an hour at the summit—there’s this wide-open feeling up there that’s hard to describe. You can walk down to Rigi Kaltbad or just hop another train (I did both because my legs were indecisive). At the spa, I fumbled my way through renting a towel (the woman at reception smiled patiently while I tried my best German) and sank into warm mineral water that smelled faintly metallic. Steam on my glasses, mountain air outside. No one rushed me; there’s no set schedule except your own.

The trip back is flexible—train or cable car depending on what’s running or how you feel about heights. By late afternoon the light gets golden over Lake Lucerne again. If you’re lucky with weather, it feels like you could stay forever just drifting between water and sky. I still think about that quiet moment in the spa when everything else faded out for a bit.
