You’ll ride Europe’s oldest cogwheel train from Vitznau up Mount Rigi for sweeping lake views, then descend to Rigi Kaltbad for hours in the mineral spa designed by Mario Botta. Move at your own pace with unlimited rides included and let yourself drift between mountain air and warm water—a day that lingers long after you leave.
The first thing I remember is the sound—the old cogwheel train at Vitznau chugging uphill, all mechanical clatter and little bursts of steam. I grabbed a window seat, pressed my forehead to the glass, and watched Lake Lucerne slide away below. There was this faint smell of metal and pine needles drifting in through the cracks. Some local kids were giggling behind me, pointing out cows with bells so loud you could hear them even with the windows closed. It’s weirdly comforting, that rhythm.
At Rigi Kulm, I stepped out into a wind sharper than I expected (bring a scarf if you’re sensitive like me). The view just sort of hits you sideways—lakes tangled around each other, snow on distant peaks, people snapping photos but also just standing there quietly. There’s a Lok 7 exhibition at the top now; I wandered in mostly to warm up my hands but ended up poking around longer than planned. No one rushes you here. That’s something I noticed about Mount Rigi—everyone moves at their own pace, which is lucky because I’m slow on mountain stairs.
I took the train back down (timing is easy—every hour like clockwork) and got off at Rigi Kaltbad. The spa is right across from the station—no chance to get lost—and it smells faintly of minerals and eucalyptus when you walk in. Slipping into the warm water after all that crisp air felt like sinking into velvet. There was an older Swiss couple floating silently near the window; we exchanged sleepy nods. The light outside kept shifting—clouds rolling over the Alps—and for a while I just floated there thinking about nothing in particular. Not sure why that sticks with me so much.
You board the cogwheel train at Vitznau; trains depart every hour at xx:15 and take you directly up to Rigi Kulm.
Yes, your day pass includes admission to the Mineral Baths & Spa at Rigi Kaltbad.
Your ticket allows unlimited rides on all cogwheel trains and cable cars between Vitznau, Goldau, Weggis, and Rigi Kulm for one day.
Children under 1 year are not allowed in the Mineral Baths & Spa; children up to 15 travel free on Mt. Rigi with an adult but need tickets for lake cruise and spa.
Bring weather-appropriate clothing for changing mountain conditions and don’t forget your swimsuit for the spa.
No guide or pickup is provided; this is a self-guided experience using public transport options nearby.
If Weggis–Rigi Kaltbad cable car is closed, use the Vitznau train line instead; check rigi.ch before travel as no refunds are given due to closures.
Your day includes unlimited rides on Mount Rigi’s cogwheel trains—including Europe’s first mountain railway from Vitznau—and cable cars between Weggis and Rigi Kaltbad (or alternate train if needed), plus full-day admission to the Mineral Baths & Spa at Rigi Kaltbad. You can visit the Lok 7 exhibition at no extra cost before heading back down whenever you’re ready.
