The Experience

The cogwheel train pulls away from Vitznau station at :15 every hour, and you're climbing Europe's first mountain railway toward Rigi Kulm. The track switchbacks through meadow and forest, the angle steep enough that you feel the engine working beneath you. Around you, Lake Lucerne spreads wider with every meter of altitude. The whole day unfolds from the top — three transport options, unlimited rides, and the choice of route is yours.

Rigi Kulm sits at 1,797 meters, and the 360-degree views don't need description because they're the reason Swiss tourists have been coming here for two centuries. The newly opened Lok 7 exhibition at the summit is free with your pass, a small museum about the railway itself — the kind of thing that sounds dry until you're standing inside looking at how they built this thing in 1871. You can spend an hour up there or three, moving between photo points, sitting on a bench, letting the scale of it sink in. The trains run every hour, so there's no schedule pressure.

The descent branches. Most people take the cogwheel train back down to Vitznau, but your pass also covers the cable car from Weggis and the train line from Goldau, so you can loop differently if you want. The real draw, though, is Rigi Kaltbad — the mineral baths halfway down the mountain, designed by Mario Botta, the Swiss architect who doesn't do ordinary. You get off the train there, walk straight into the spa, and spend however long you need in the mineral pools. The water is warm, the setting is quiet, and you're still surrounded by the Alps. Bring your swimsuit. After that, take the connecting train back to Vitznau or the cable car to Weggis, depending on where you parked or how you arrived.
