The experience

The walking portion covers two hours on foot through Lucerne's medieval center. Your guide takes you along the Chapel Bridge to learn its history, then through the old town and past the nine medieval towers that ring the city. The route includes the fortified walls (in summer you walk three towers, in winter the full wall circuit) and finishes at the Lion Monument, where the guide explains the significance of this Swiss landmark. The pace is built for moderate fitness. You're moving through the city rather than climbing steep grades.

After the walking tour, your guide hands you the boat tickets and audioguide information. You board for a one-hour round-trip cruise across Lake Lucerne at your own pace, listening to commentary in your choice of languages. This is not a narrated boat tour. You control when you listen and what you focus on. The lake crossing gives you the landscape and the mountains from the water, a different angle on the region than the walking section provides.

The tour runs in all weather, so bring layers and waterproof gear if rain is forecast. Bookings start at one person and go up to groups of eight. Larger groups need direct contact with customer service to confirm availability. If you want to extend the day, you can add either a Swiss cheese and wine tasting or Alpine beer paired with sausage and pretzels.
