Step-by-step itinerary

Sunset kayaking and sightseeing tour

  • Kayak in Stockholm Archipelago
  • Enjoy calm evening waters
  • Spot wildlife like beavers and seals
  • Visit Vaxholm Fortress
  • Explore Bogesundslandet nature reserve
  • See traditional fishing cottages at Norrhammen
  • Learn about Ytterby Mine and elements

The experience

The Stockholm Archipelago sits just 30 minutes from the city center, but at sunset the pace slows and the water stills. You paddle in a sea kayak (fully equipped with paddle, spray skirt and life vest) through waters where beavers, seals and roe deer move along the shoreline as the light softens. The guide leads you quietly past landmarks like Vaxholm Fortress, built by King Gustav Vasa in the 1500s to defend Stockholm, and through Bogesundslandet, one of the city's largest nature reserves with its old oak trees and green meadows. The route also passes Norrhammen, where traditional fishing cottages line the north harbor, and Resarö Island near Ytterby, the only place in the world with four periodic table elements named after it.

The three-hour outing is built around a slower rhythm than the standard four-hour archipelago tour. You'll stop for fika, the Swedish coffee break, with time to rest and take in the surroundings without rushing. A waterproof bag keeps your phone and documents safe, and a storage room holds your luggage while you paddle. The guide speaks English and keeps the group moving at a pace that lets you absorb the calm of the evening rather than cover distance.

You can book the kayaking alone or add hotel pickup depending on where you're staying. Participants must be able to swim, be between 1.50 and 1.95 meters tall, and weigh no more than 110 kg. Children under 16 paddle in a double kayak with an adult. The activity is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

Is this one for you?Choose the sunset timing if you want to paddle when the archipelago is calmest and wildlife is most active: the slower pace and evening light make spotting seals and beavers far more likely than on daytime tours. Add hotel pickup if you'd rather not navigate to the departure point yourself.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What wildlife might I see while kayaking in the Stockholm Archipelago at sunset?

Seals, beavers, roe deer and coastal birds are native to the archipelago waters. The calm evening conditions and slower pace make spotting them more likely than on faster daytime tours.

Is the three-hour kayaking trip suitable if I'm not an experienced paddler?

Yes. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and the pace is deliberately slower and more relaxing than the standard four-hour archipelago kayak tour. You'll have a guide leading the group and all equipment provided.

What is fika, and when do we have it during the tour?

Fika is a Swedish coffee break tradition. The tour includes a fika stop where you rest and enjoy refreshments partway through the paddle, giving you time to take in the surroundings and recover before continuing.

Can I bring my phone and camera on the kayak?

Yes. A waterproof bag is provided to keep your phone and documents safe while you paddle. A storage room also holds your luggage while you're on the water.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the kayaking departure point?

You can book the kayaking alone and make your own way there, or add hotel pickup as an option at checkout. Public transportation is available nearby if you prefer that instead.
