You’ll feel Stockholm fall away as you zip through its archipelago by speed boat, passing old summer houses and waving at locals along watery highways. With a local guide sharing stories and a stop by Vaxholm’s lively harbor, expect wind-in-your-face moments and glimpses into real Swedish summer life that linger long after you’re back on land.
"Hold on tight, this bit gets wild!" our guide shouted over the engine as we shot past Fjäderholmarna. I could taste salt in the air and my cheeks stung from the wind — not in a bad way, just that Swedish summer kind of way. We’d started right in central Stockholm, zipped by Gamla Stan and the Vasa museum so quickly I barely had time to wave at Gröna Lund’s rollercoaster. The city faded behind us faster than I expected.
Once we really hit speed — 42 knots, apparently (I had to Google that later) — everything felt lighter. There were islands everywhere, some with little red houses perched right at the water’s edge, others just rocks and trees and birds. Our guide, Erik, pointed out which families had owned their summer places for generations. He said most never go up for sale; people just wait their whole lives for a chance to inherit one. I tried to imagine growing up here, taking boats instead of buses.
We slowed down near Vaxholm — “the capital of the archipelago,” Erik called it — where other sailors waved as we passed by. There was this smell of fresh bread drifting from somewhere onshore (or maybe I imagined it because I was hungry). The sun kept slipping in and out behind clouds, throwing silver across the water. On the way back I found myself quiet for a while, just listening to the slap of waves against the hull and thinking about how different life feels out here compared to Stockholm’s busy streets. It’s funny what sticks with you.
Your day includes pickup from central Stockholm plus all safety gear: life jackets, goggles, warm overalls, hats, and insurance are provided before setting off into the archipelago waters with your local guide.
