Stockholm Gamla Stan & Archipelago: Walking tour with boat cruise
Cobblestone streets and open water in one afternoon
A combined tour of Stockholm pairs a 2-hour private walking tour of Gamla Stan (Old Town) with a 2.5-hour guided boat cruise through Stockholm Archipelago. Your private guide leads you through the historic streets, past the Royal Palace, Cathedral and Parliament House, then escorts you to the pier with cruise tickets and boarding information. The boat's captain provides live commentary in English and Swedish as you sail through the archipelago's islands, waterways and natural landscapes. Group size stays under 25 people per guide.
Step-by-step itinerary
Gamla Stan tour and archipelago cruise
- Meet guide at Lars Johan Hierta Monument
- Walk through Gamla Stan's cobblestone streets
- See Royal Palace, Cathedral, Parliament House
- Hear stories about Stockholm's history
- Receive tickets and board archipelago cruise
- Cruise Stockholm Archipelago with live commentary
The Experience
You meet your guide at Riddarhustorget in front of the Lars Johan Hierta Monument and walk into Gamla Stan's cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings and historic squares. The Royal Palace, the 13th-century Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Prize Museum, Parliament House and the Swedish Royal Opera all sit within these narrow lanes, and your guide connects them with stories about Viking expeditions, historical events and daily life across centuries. The walking portion runs two hours and stays at a relaxed pace.
After the walking tour, your guide walks you to the cruise dock and hands over your tickets for the archipelago boat. You board a modern ship without the guide—this leg is yours to take in at your own rhythm. The captain narrates in English and Swedish as the boat moves through Stockholm's vast network of islands, natural harbors and open water. The cruise lasts 2.5 hours and includes a mini bar, cafeteria, restroom and free wifi onboard. Bring layers; the water is colder than the streets.
The whole experience runs about four and a half hours from start to finish. Your group stays small—no more than 25 people per guide, so larger parties get additional guides assigned. The meeting point is accessible by public transportation, and all areas of the tour are wheelchair accessible; infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and small children sit on an adult's lap during the cruise.

What's the Royal Palace like, and do you actually get inside it on the walking tour?
The Stockholm Royal Palace is one of the main highlights you see from the outside during the 2-hour walking tour of Gamla Stan. Your guide points it out and shares its history and significance as part of the cobblestone-street route through Old Town, but the tour does not include entry into the palace itself.
Does the guide stay with you on the boat cruise through the archipelago?
The guide walks you to the pier and gives you the cruise tickets and boarding details, but does not board the boat. Once you're on the ship, the captain provides live commentary in English and Swedish for the 2.5-hour cruise through the islands and waterways.
What should I wear for a day that includes both walking streets and being on the water?
Wear layers of clothing. The streets of Gamla Stan are comfortable for walking, but the water of Stockholm Archipelago is colder than the land, so an extra jacket or sweater makes the boat portion more pleasant.
Is there food and drink available during the cruise?
The boat has a mini bar and cafeteria onboard where you can buy food and drinks at your own expense. The ship also has a restroom and free wifi.
How do I get to the meeting point, and is there parking nearby?
You meet at Riddarhustorget 9 in central Stockholm, in front of the Lars Johan Hierta Monument. Public transportation options are available nearby. We recommend arriving early so you have time to reach the cruise dock on schedule.
