The experience
The walking tour begins at the Royal Swedish Opera House, where you'll learn how the building figured in Verdi's opera "The Masked Ball," composed about Swedish king Gustav III. From there, the route takes you past the Parliament Building (constructed between 1897 and 1905 in Neo-Renaissance style), and the Royal Palace, built in the 18th century in Baroque style. You'll see the Grand Hotel, where Nobel laureates stay during the prize ceremonies, and Lejonbacken, one of Stockholm's most photographed spots, with views of the Royal Garden and the Financial District.
The heart of the walking tour is Stortorget, the central square in Old Town, surrounded by 17th-century Scandinavian Renaissance and 18th-century Classicism buildings. From there you walk Köpmangatan (Merchants Street, documented in written records since 1350), and narrow medieval alleyways down to Skeppsbron, where cargo has been loaded since the 1600s. The guide explains the history of Swedish government, the Bernadotte dynasty (still ruling after 200 years), and the events that shaped the city, including the 1530 Bloodbath of Stockholm at Stortorget itself.
After the walking portion, you board the Royal Canal Tour at Strömkajen. The boat takes you through the Djurgårdsbrunn Canal with views of the Stockholm skyline. Audioguides are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Italian and Russian. The boat bar serves Swedish fika (coffee and cinnamon roll), tea, soft drinks and pastries. Beer, wine, sandwiches and snacks are also available for purchase.
