The experience

The day starts with a drive through St. Lucia's capital and fishing villages (a brief stop at Morne Fortune for views over Castries, then through the colorful streets of Anse La Raye and Canaries) before you reach Soufrière and board the speedboat. The boat hugs the coast toward Anse Chastanet, where you enter the water with snorkeling gear to explore the reef. Tropical fish, coral, and the marine life move around you. The guide is there to point out what lives in the shallows and deeper sections.

From Anse Chastanet, the boat continues to Sugar Beach, the crescent of sand wedged between the two Pitons that define the island's silhouette. You swim, float, or lie on the sand for as long as the schedule allows. The Pitons rise directly behind you, not a view from a distance, but the geography you are sitting inside. Lunch arrives here: local food, not a boxed sandwich, and the drinks keep coming through the afternoon.
