The experience
The day starts with a 1.5-hour drive south from Colombo to the Madu River, a mangrove lagoon connected to the sea by a narrow canal and dotted with 64 islands of varying size. A boat and driver take you through relatively undisturbed mangrove vegetation where Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, Estuarine Crocodiles, and Flapshell Turtles shelter among the trees. The lagoon qualifies as a wetland of international importance under seven criteria, and the boat ride reveals the biodiversity that makes it one of Sri Lanka's richest ecosystems.
After the river safari, you drive 45 minutes to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built first by the Portuguese in the late 16th century and extensively modified by the Dutch in the 17th century. The fort illustrates European architecture and South Asian traditions across three centuries, and you walk its ramparts and explore the historic streets. Nearby, the Peace Pagoda sits on a hillside overlooking Unawatuna, built by the Mahayana sect as a peace initiative. Jungle Beach, a 10-minute drive from the fort, offers snorkeling over coral reefs and watersports if you want to enter the water.
The route continues to Mirissa, where you can visit Coconut Tree Hill, a private coconut estate on a high cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, and Secret Beach, a smaller cove flanked by palm-covered hills. On the way back to Colombo, you stop at the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, started in 1981 to protect sea turtles from predators. If you time the visit for evening, you can release baby turtles into the sea as they hatch, when the risk from birds, dogs, and crabs is lowest. The full loop takes 8 to 10 hours from pickup to return.
