The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell — not incense, but something sharper, almost peppery, drifting from the Matale Hindu temple as we stepped out for photos. Our driver, Suresh, grinned when I asked about it. “Spices,” he said, waving toward a little stall where someone was grinding something red and gold. We didn’t linger long — just enough for a few pictures and to watch a woman in a bright sari light candles with this quick flick of her wrist. I tried to do it too (not as graceful), and she laughed at me in that way that’s kind but also says “nice try.”

After that, we stopped at a spice garden. It’s touristy, sure — but I liked how the guide there crushed a leaf between his fingers and held it out for us to smell. Cinnamon, cardamom… all those words you read on tea boxes suddenly made sense. My hands smelled like curry leaves for hours after. The drive to Dambulla Cave Temple took maybe another hour? Suresh played old Sinhalese pop songs on the radio and told us stories about the kings who hid treasures in these caves (he swears one is still hidden somewhere). The caves themselves were cool inside — literally cool — with these ancient Buddha statues lined up in the half-darkness. You could hear your own footsteps echoing off the stone.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is… well, it’s big. I knew that already but standing at the bottom looking up is different than seeing it in photos. The climb isn’t easy if you’re scared of heights (I am), but there are places to stop and catch your breath or pretend you’re admiring the view while actually just trying not to look down. Suresh waited at the bottom (“I’ve climbed enough for one lifetime,” he joked). At the top, wind whipped my hair around and there were these faded frescoes on the walls — women painted centuries ago, still somehow watching over everything. I sat there longer than I meant to.

The ride back to Kandy was quiet; everyone sort of lost in their own thoughts or maybe just tired. There’s something about seeing so much history packed into one day that makes you feel small in a good way. If you want a Sigiriya day tour that feels personal (and includes pickup so you don’t have to think about logistics), this is probably it.
