Kandy to Sigiriya Day Tour: Rock Fortress & Cave Temple
Climb a 200-metre rock fortress and walk inside a World Heritage cave temple in one day
This day tour from Kandy visits four stops across the Matale District: the Muthumariamman Temple in Matale, a spice garden, Sigiriya Rock Fortress (a massive ancient rock column nearly 200 metres high), and Dambulla Cave Temple, a World Heritage Site also known as the Golden Temple. Hotel pickup and drop-off, a private air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking driver and guide, and bottled water are included; entrance fees and meals are separate. The tour runs 9 to 12 hours.
Step-by-step itinerary
Sightseeing Sigiriya and Dambulla
- Visit Muthumariamman Hindu Temple
- Explore herbal spice garden
- Tour Sigiriya Rock Fortress
- Visit Dambulla Cave Temple
The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Kandy hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Your first stop is the Muthumariamman Temple in Matale, a Hindu temple dedicated to Mariamman, the goddess of rain and fertility—the name "Muthu" means pearl in Tamil. From there you move to a herbal spice garden, where you can see how local plants are grown and used.
The centrepiece is Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an ancient site dominated by a rock column that rises nearly 200 metres from the ground. The fortress sits in the northern Matale District near Dambulla and carries both historical and archaeological weight; climbing it is the physical core of the day. After Sigiriya, you head to Dambulla Cave Temple, a World Heritage Site carved into rock and gilded throughout—locals call it the Golden Temple. The caves hold Buddhist statues and artwork that have survived centuries in the central highlands.
Your English-speaking guide travels with you the whole day and explains each site as you move between them. The driver handles all navigation and timing, so the sequence of four stops fits into a single outing without you arranging transport or figuring out where to go next. Bottled water is provided during the drive.
