The experience
How do you get from Kandy to two of Sri Lanka's most visited monuments without arranging your own transport? This tour picks you up at your hotel and drives you north in a private air-conditioned vehicle (either a minivan or a bus, depending on your group size) to Dambulla first. The cave temple sits atop a rock outcrop and holds ancient shrines carved into the stone. You walk up to explore them before heading to the herbal garden, a stop that breaks the day and gives you a chance to learn about traditional Sri Lankan plant remedies.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress is the centerpiece. The rock itself rises 200 meters from the plain, and you climb a series of stone staircases and metal walkways built into the cliff face to reach the summit, where the ruins of a fifth-century palace sit flat on top. The climb takes effort and the steps are steep in places, so a moderate level of fitness helps. Once you're up there, the views stretch across the dry zone landscape in all directions. The fortress is the main draw of the day, and the time you spend on the rock (climbing, walking the ruins, taking in the view) is where the tour earns its reputation.
Your guide speaks English throughout and travels with you the whole day. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is bottled water and the air-conditioned vehicle itself. You'll need to buy entrance tickets to both Sigiriya and Dambulla separately, and lunch is on you. The tour does not include meals.
