You start from your Kandy hotel in a private vehicle with a driver-guide who handles the route and timing for the day. The drive takes you north through central Sri Lanka toward Sigiriya, where the fortress rises as a 5th-century rock citadel surrounded by water gardens engineered centuries before such hydraulic planning was common elsewhere. You climb to the summit and explore the ruins of the palace, the mirror wall and the frescoes that survive on the rock face. From Sigiriya, the route continues to Matale, where you stop at the Muthumariamman Hindu temple: a tall structure with ornate Gopuram towers covered in hundreds of colored sculptures.
