The Experience

“If you listen closely, you’ll hear the monks chanting before sunrise,” our driver-guide said as we pulled up to the Temple of the Tooth Relic. I didn’t expect the air to smell so much like jasmine and incense — it kind of lingered on my shirt for hours after. Inside, people moved quietly, some with flowers cupped in their hands. I tried to follow our guide’s explanation about the Buddha’s tooth relic (he pointed out the golden roof), but honestly I was just caught up watching a little girl balancing lotus petals on her palm.

We wandered around Kandy Lake next — locals call it “Kiri Muhuda”, which means ‘Sea of Milk’. The water was still except for a few ripples from lazy ducks. Our guide told us King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe built it centuries ago; he seemed proud of that. The city feels busy but not rushed, if that makes sense. At Kandy View Point, there was this haze over the rooftops and someone selling mango slices with chili salt (I tried one — way spicier than I thought). The main keyword here is definitely “Kandy city tour”, because every corner felt like another story.

Bahirawakanda Temple was next — you can see that giant Buddha from almost anywhere in town. We climbed up (lots of steps!) and the view really does make you pause. There were kids giggling at pigeons and a breeze that finally cooled me off. Later at the market, I got distracted by all the colors — piles of jackfruit, women bargaining over spices, a man waving us over to try some weirdly sweet bananas. Our guide chatted with vendors in Sinhala; I picked up maybe two words.

The National Gem Museum was cooler inside than out (thankfully), and I learned more about sapphires than I ever thought possible. After that came my favorite part: visiting a tea factory outside Kandy. The smell hit me first — earthy and sharp at once. We watched leaves being dried and tasted fresh Ceylon tea right there; honestly, nothing like what I’ve had back home.

By evening we were at the Kandyan dance show near the lake club — drums echoing through the hall, dancers spinning so fast their costumes blurred. Our guide grinned when he saw me trying to clap along (I was hopelessly offbeat). On the drive back to my hotel, windows down, I realized how much of Kandy stays with you — not just sights but sounds and small kindnesses from strangers along the way.
