The Experience

“If you want the best king coconut, you have to stop before Dambulla,” our driver Sunil said, already slowing down by a roadside stall. He grinned at the old woman waving two orange coconuts in each hand. I didn’t realize how sweet it’d taste until I took that first cold sip—sticky heat on my neck, coconut water dripping down my chin. Sunil laughed and handed me a napkin. That’s how the day trip from Kandy to Sigiriya & Dambulla started: not rushed, just little moments like that.

We stopped at the Matale Hindu temple first—color everywhere, incense smoke curling up into the morning haze. I fumbled with my sarong (knees covered, as Sunil reminded me), and an old man inside nodded at us as if he’d seen a thousand travelers do the same. The drive after was quiet; fields flickered past and then we pulled into an Ayurvedic village for herbal tea that tasted like earth and pepper. Not sure what was in it but it made my tongue tingle.

Dambulla Cave Temple was cooler inside than I expected—stone underfoot, damp air, walls painted with stories of Buddha’s life. Our guide pointed out faded reds and golds from the 2nd century; I tried to imagine monks working by candlelight. Lunch after was simple rice and curry at a roadside place where everyone seemed to know Sunil (he got extra papadam). Then came Sigiriya Rock Fortress in late afternoon sun—climbing those steps felt endless but the view up top…well, I still think about that breeze hitting my face while monkeys darted around below.

The last part was Minneriya safari—jeep bouncing over red dust tracks while herds of elephants wandered across the grasslands. There’s this hush when you see them up close, just their breathing and birds calling somewhere far off. We got back to Kandy tired and dusty but sort of glowing too. Honestly, I didn’t expect to laugh so much or feel so small watching those elephants move through the dusk.
