The experience
How do you fit two of Sri Lanka's biggest draws into one day without arranging transport yourself? This tour leaves from your Kandy hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle and builds the day around Sigiriya Rock Fortress first, then Minneriya National Park. The route passes through the central highlands, so the guide stops at a spice and herbal garden to show where Sri Lanka's world-renowned spices grow, and at Dambulla Cave Temple, a 1st-century complex carved into rock with five caves painted in intricate religious patterns. Both are on the way. Neither adds time to the day.
Sigiriya itself sits about 30 minutes' drive from Dambulla. The fortress crowns a high volcanic plateau and is locally called the eighth wonder of the world. The main entrance is shaped like a huge stone lion, and the palace complex, which also served as a monastery, is ringed by landscaped gardens and water features. The western wall carries frescoes. You climb to the top. The guide walks with you and explains what you're seeing. Entrance is included, as is the guide's time.
Minneriya National Park is the second main stop. The park spans nearly 89 square kilometers and is best visited between May and September, when the tank (reservoir) dries up and reveals green that draws wildlife. The headline is the elephant herd: sometimes up to 200 wild elephants gather here, along with 24 species of mammals, 160 bird species, and endemic monkeys like the Purple-faced Langur. You drive through the park with the guide, who points out what moves. The park entrance fee is included. Once you're back in Kandy, the driver drops you at your hotel.
