The experience

The safari starts with hotel pickup and a drive to Minneriya National Park, built around the Minneriya Tank: a 3rd-century irrigation reservoir that now sustains the park's ecosystem and draws its wildlife. Your guide navigates the park by jeep, stopping where elephants, birds and other animals gather. The tank itself is the anchor: during the dry season (July through September), it becomes a watering hole for hundreds of elephants migrating from surrounding forests, and that is when the Great Elephant Gathering happens. Outside those months, you still see elephants and other wildlife, but the concentration is lower.

The three- to four-hour drive gives you time to move through different sections of the park and watch the animals at different points around the water. You can photograph throughout the safari. Bottled water is provided, and the jeep is private: no sharing the vehicle with other groups. Hotel drop-off is included at the end.

The park entrance fee is separate from the tour price, though your guide can help you purchase it when you arrive. Public transportation options exist nearby if you need them, but the private pickup means you do not arrange your own transport to the park.
