The Experience

You know that feeling when you’re not quite awake yet, but the world outside is already alive? That’s how it started for me, bouncing in the back of a Jeep just after sunrise, the air still cool and smelling faintly like wet earth. Our driver — I think his name was Nuwan — grinned as he pointed out the first elephant tracks pressed deep into the mud. I tried to snap a photo but my hands were honestly shaking a bit from excitement (and maybe too much hotel coffee).

Minneriya is famous for elephants, sure, but nobody warned me about how quiet it gets when they appear. We’d been talking about birds — bright flashes darting between trees, some kind of eagle fishing near the reservoir — and then suddenly everyone just went silent. A whole herd was right there, moving so slowly you almost missed it at first. One calf kept flapping its ears; Nuwan whispered something about how they do that when they’re curious or nervous. I didn’t expect to feel so small watching them.

We rolled past a group of buffalo lounging in the shallows (they looked like they had life figured out), and once I spotted a crocodile sunning itself on a rock — which made me double-check where my feet were hanging. The ride itself was bumpy enough that I nearly lost my water bottle twice, but honestly, it felt right for this kind of place. After four hours weaving through Minneriya’s dusty trails with our local guide pointing out monkeys and deer I’d never have noticed alone, we headed back toward the park gate. The light by then was all gold and haze; I still think about that view sometimes, especially on grey days back home.
