The experience
Five hours gets you through a full briefing, two dives on different wrecks, and the surface interval between them. A certified instructor leads the descent into the Indian Ocean, where the wrecks (Thermopylae Sierra, Medhafaru, Cargo wreck, SS Perseus, Walet wreck, Salviva, Black Coral wreck and Lotus Barge among them) sit on the seafloor as habitats for the marine life that has claimed them. Each site tells a different story of maritime history, and the depth and layout of each wreck shapes what you'll see on the dive.
The operation includes pickup from your hotel, so you don't arrange transport to the dive site. Equipment (tanks, regulators, weights, buoyancy control and wetsuit) comes with the booking. Snacks are provided between dives. The minimum age is 16, and you'll need at least a moderate level of fitness. The operator does not recommend diving for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns or pregnancy.
The diving season in Colombo runs December to April. A newly certified diver and a seasoned one can both join the same boat. The briefing covers what everyone needs to know before entering the water, and the instructor adjusts the dive plan to the group's experience level.
