The experience

The safari starts with pickup from your hotel in Bentota or the surrounding areas: Beruwala, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Induruwa or Aluthgama. You board a private air-conditioned car for transport to the lagoon, then transfer to the safari boat for the three-hour drift through the mangrove channels. The boat is small enough to navigate the narrow waterways where the wildlife congregates, and you'll have a live English-speaking guide pointing out what moves in the trees and water.

Crocodiles and water monitors are the main draw, but the lagoon also holds monkeys and cormorants. The mangroves themselves are dense and intricate. The guide knows which channels hold the most activity and which turns tend to surface the animals. You're not on a fixed schedule once the boat leaves the dock. The guide reads the water and adjusts the route based on what's moving that morning.

The package wraps in a stop at a local wooden-carving workshop and a gem museum, both included in the price. Transport back to your hotel closes the day. Bottled water and WiFi on board are provided. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are not, so plan accordingly if you're booking an early departure.
