The Experience

The jeep leaves your hotel in the early morning or mid-morning and heads inland toward the park. Udawalawe sits framed by highlands to the north and spreads across grasslands and dense bush forest—the terrain that makes it one of Sri Lanka's best spots for spotting wild elephants in a single outing. Your driver-guide navigates the park roads during the three-hour safari, stopping when animals appear. Beyond elephants, the park holds sambar deer, water buffalo, crocodiles, and a range of bird species, though the elephants are what draw most visitors here.

After the safari, you visit the Elephant Transit Home, a facility established in 1995 by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation. It rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. The stop gives you a closer look at individual animals and the work behind their care. Lunch is included and happens during the day; bottled water comes with the tour as well.

The full outing takes ten to twelve hours from pickup to drop-off. You travel in a private jeep with your own driver-guide rather than sharing a vehicle, which means the pace and stops follow what you want to see. All entry fees to the national park and the Elephant Transit Home are covered, so there are no surprises at the gate. A minimum of two people per booking is required.
