The experience
The day starts on the Bentota River, where you watch for crocodiles and water monitors gliding through mangrove forests while local fishermen work the water using traditional methods. The river is alive with bird species, and the guide points out the ecosystem that keeps the waterway intact. From there you move to the Victor Hasselblad Sea Turtle Research and Conservation Centre, where you see sea turtles at different life stages and learn about rehabilitation efforts for injured animals. If timing aligns, you might watch hatchlings being released back into the ocean.
The afternoon takes you to Koggala to watch stilt fishermen balanced on poles driven into the seabed, a practice that has survived for generations. You'll have a chance to try the technique yourself under their guidance. Then comes Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Dutch, Portuguese and British colonial architecture lines narrow streets that open onto ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean. The fort holds a lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, and shops and cafes tucked into centuries-old walls.
The final two stops round out the cultural picture: the Ariyapala Mask Museum, where artisans carve and paint traditional masks used in ceremonies and believed to hold healing powers, and the Beruwalage Moonstone Mine, where you watch miners extract these luminescent stones and see them polished in the workshop. You can buy directly from the source if you choose. The Tsunami Honganji Vihara, a memorial to the 2004 tsunami, offers a moment of reflection on the site's history and the community's resilience.

What wildlife will I actually see on the Bentota River boat safari?
Crocodiles, water monitors and various bird species are common sightings as you cruise through the mangrove forests. Local fishermen using traditional methods are also part of the river experience.

You have the chance to try the technique under the fishermen's guidance, so it's hands-on if you want it to be.
What happens at the Victor Hasselblad Sea Turtle Centre?

Is the Ariyapala Mask Museum just a display, or can you see the masks being made?
You can watch artisans at work carving and painting masks using techniques passed down through generations, so it's an active workshop as well as a museum.
Do I need to buy moonstone jewelry at the mine, or is it optional?
Buying is entirely optional. You see the full mining and polishing process and have the chance to purchase authentic moonstone jewelry directly, but there's no obligation.
How much time do we spend at Galle Fort?
The itinerary includes time to explore the fort's ramparts, streets, shops and landmarks like the lighthouse and Dutch Reformed Church, though the exact duration depends on the day's pacing across all six stops.
