The experience
The Bentota River flows into the Indian Ocean and forms a lagoon at its mouth: the kind of shallow, sheltered water where fish gather and a local knows the patterns. You'll fish here with someone who works these waters regularly, not a guide reading from a script. The activity runs three hours, either starting at 6am for the morning bite or at 3pm as the light shifts. Pickup happens from your hotel in Bentota, Beruwala, Kalutara, Wadduwa, Ahungalla, Kosgoda, Induruwa, Balapitiya, Ambalangoda, Aluthgama, Maggona, Payagala or Waskaduwa: a wide net of towns along the coast.
You handle the rod and cast yourself. The fisherman positions the boat, reads the water and tells you where to work. All equipment comes with you: rods, tackle, everything needed. Light refreshment is included to keep you going through the three hours. The weather has to cooperate: if conditions turn rough, the operator reschedules you for another date or refunds the full amount. A minimum of two people per booking keeps the boat moving and the cost reasonable.
If the fish cooperate and you land something worth keeping, the operator can arrange to have your catch cleaned and cooked at a local restaurant, served fresh the same day. This costs extra and is entirely optional. It's the kind of detail that turns a morning on the water into a full meal story.

Is this one for you?Book the 6am departure if you want the strongest bite and the quietest lagoon. The 3pm slot works if you prefer to start your day elsewhere and fish as the afternoon light softens. Either way, you need at least one other person in your party to meet the minimum booking size.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I fish the Bentota lagoon if I've never cast a line before?
Yes. The experienced fisherman works with all levels and handles boat positioning and technique guidance. You do the casting and the reeling, learning as you go.
What time of day is better for fishing in Bentota, the 6am or 3pm departure?
Both work. The 6am slot catches the early bite when fish feed actively. The 3pm departure fishes as light changes and the water cools. Local conditions vary by season, so either can be productive.
What happens if I catch fish? Do I have to eat them?
No. You keep what you catch or release it. If you want the fish cooked, the operator arranges that at a local restaurant for an extra charge. Otherwise you simply fish for the experience.
Which pickup location is closest to where I'm staying in the area?
Pickup is available from Bentota, Beruwala, Kalutara, Wadduwa, Ahungalla, Kosgoda, Induruwa, Balapitiya, Ambalangoda, Aluthgama, Maggona, Payagala and Waskaduwa. Choose the town nearest your hotel when you book.
Is three hours enough time to actually fish, or is most of it travel?
The three hours is on the water fishing, not including pickup and drop-off from your hotel. Travel time depends on which pickup location you choose.
