The experience

Whale watching in Mirissa has been the draw since 2009, when the protected harbor became Sri Lanka's center for dolphin and whale sightings. The boat leaves early enough that you get picked up from your hotel before dawn: no need to navigate to the coast yourself. Once aboard, the captain and crew walk you through what you're watching for: the giants that pass through these waters include blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales and the rarer killer whales. Breakfast and water arrive on board, and the crew keeps commentary running as you keep your eyes on the horizon.

The return route builds in two stops. First is the stilt fishing site, where fishermen perch on branched poles in the shallows: a traditional method that resumed after the 2004 tsunami and now appears regularly along the southern coast. From there, you can ask to add Galle Fort, a Portuguese fortress built in 1588 that sits high above the city and holds a clock tower, bastions, a natural harbor view, a lighthouse and a Dutch church. If you're interested, the driver can also show you Sri Lanka's natural moonstone mine and factory, where you see the feldspar stone being worked.

The tour runs six hours total and returns you to your hotel. This is a private booking, so only your group travels together. A minimum of two people per booking applies. The experience requires good weather. If conditions cancel the tour, you get offered a different date or a full refund. Guides speak English by default. Russian, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Tamil and Hindi-speaking guides can be arranged for an extra cost.
