The experience
The boat leaves early so you catch the whales when they're most active. You get picked up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned car or van (no waiting for a group, no shared transport), and driven to the coast. Once on the water, the captain and crew keep watch and explain what you're seeing: blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales and occasionally rarer killer whales move through these waters. Dolphins are common too. Breakfast comes on board, along with bottled water and WiFi if you need it.
The seven-hour day includes the boat time, the drive there and back, and at least one stop on land. On the return journey, you visit a stilt fisherman site where you can watch or photograph the traditional method: fishermen balanced on poles in the shallow water, a practice that nearly disappeared after the 2004 tsunami but has returned in recent years. If the conditions and your interest align, the guide can show you Galle Fort, a Portuguese fortress from 1588 with a clock tower, bastions and a natural harbor, or take you to Sri Lanka's only natural moonstone mine and factory.
This is a private tour, so only your group participates. A minimum of two people per booking is required. The experience depends on good weather. If the sea is too rough, you'll be offered a different date or a full refund. Pickup is included from Bentota, Induruwa, Aluthgama, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Balapitiya, Beruwala or Kaluthara. You choose your zone at checkout.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What whales and dolphins can you actually see off Mirissa?
Blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales and rare killer whales inhabit these waters, along with dolphins. Mirissa has been the center of Sri Lanka's whale and dolphin watching since 2009, and the protected fishery harbor makes sightings common enough that the tour is organized around them.
Do I need to book this tour if I'm staying in Bentota or nearby?
Pickup is included from Bentota, Induruwa, Aluthgama, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Balapitiya, Beruwala or Kaluthara. You select your pickup zone when you book, and the private car collects you from your hotel.
What's included in the seven hours?
Breakfast on the boat, bottled water, life jackets, WiFi on board, the boat entrance fee, and all transport by private air-conditioned vehicle are included. Lunch is not included, and gratuities are separate.
Can I visit Galle Fort or the moonstone mine on the same day?
Yes, both are optional stops on the return journey. The guide can show you Galle Fort, a 1588 Portuguese fortress with a clock tower and harbor views, or Sri Lanka's natural moonstone mine and factory, depending on your preference and how the day unfolds.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The tour requires good weather. If it's canceled due to poor conditions, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund.
