Step-by-step itinerary

- Watch whales and dolphins
- Observe local stilt fishing
- Explore Galle Fort
- Visit Buddhist monuments and temples
- Visit Meetiyagoda moonstone and gem mining site
The experience
The day starts before dawn. Your hotel pickup connects you to the boat launching at 6:30 am from Mirissa, the closest point on the Sri Lankan coast to where blue whales feed. In season, the waters here hold five whale species (blue whale, Bryde's whale, sperm whale, killer whale and pilot whale) plus four kinds of dolphins: spinner, bottlenose, striped and Risso's. Between sightings you watch local fishermen work the water using stilt fishing, a centuries-old technique unique to this coast.
After the boat returns, the tour moves inland to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built first by the Portuguese in the late 16th century and extensively rebuilt by the Dutch in the 17th. The fort's walls and architecture show the interaction of European design with South Asian traditions across three centuries, and the site includes Buddhist temples and monuments within the fort grounds. You walk the compound with your guide, who explains the layers of history.
The final stop is Meetiyagoda, a working moonstone and gem mining site. Moonstone, the opalescent variety of feldspar, forms when two different types of feldspar grow together, creating the reflective quality that gives it its name. You see the extraction process and can examine the stones. The tour ends here, and your driver returns you to your hotel. The full day runs four to five hours of active time.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What whales and dolphins can I actually see on the Mirissa boat?
In season, five whale species inhabit these waters: blue whale, Bryde's whale, sperm whale, killer whale and pilot whale. Four dolphin species are also sighted regularly: spinner dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin and Risso's dolphin. Sightings depend on the season and sea conditions.
What is stilt fishing and where do I see it?
Stilt fishing is a traditional fishing method practiced by local fishermen off the Mirissa coast. Fishermen stand on wooden stilts in the shallow water and cast lines into the sea. You watch this technique from the boat during the whale-watching portion of the tour.
What makes Galle Fort a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Galle Fort is recognized for its unique urban ensemble illustrating the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Built first by the Portuguese and extensively modified by the Dutch, the fort's design and layout show how European fortification methods were adapted to the local landscape and culture.
What is moonstone and how is it mined at Meetiyagoda?
Moonstone is an opalescent variety of feldspar that forms when two different types of feldspar grow together, creating a reflective quality. At Meetiyagoda, you see the extraction process at an active mining site and can examine the stones that are pulled from the earth.
Does the tour include lunch?
Breakfast and water are included, but lunch is not. You'll want to plan a meal stop or bring food for the afternoon portion of the tour.
How do I get to the boat, and what time does it leave?
Hotel pickup is included in the tour. Your driver collects you from your hotel and brings you to Mirissa. The boat departs at 6:30 am, so an early start is necessary. Boat entry fees are paid separately at the time of boarding.
