Summary

Old caves, family vineyards and Valencian wines on a private day out

You’ll wander ancient wine caves in Requena, taste local Bobal wines with a real sommelier, walk sunlit vineyards at a family-run winery, and share a relaxed village lunch with more wine than you’ll probably remember by name. It’s a day trip from Valencia that leaves you thinking about old stones and new flavors long after you’re home.

I didn’t really know what “Utiel-Requena” meant until this trip. The name sounded almost made up — but as we drove out from Valencia, the city faded and the fields started rolling past, I realized how close it was. Our guide, Marta (she’s an actual sommelier), started telling us about the Bobal grape and honestly, I’d never heard of it before. She laughed when I tried to pronounce it in Spanish — I’m still not sure I got it right.

The first stop was Requena village. It’s got these caves under the old center that smell like cold stone and something earthy, like wet clay after rain. We ducked into one, following Marta’s flashlight beam over old clay pots that looked like they belonged in a museum. She poured our first tasting down there — a white wine that tasted sharper underground somehow. It was weirdly quiet except for someone’s shoes scuffing on the floor above us.

After that we went to this 19th-century winery run by a family who’ve been doing this for generations (the owner’s uncle waved at us from his tractor). Walking through the vines you could feel the sun on your arms — not too hot though, just enough to make you squint. Inside the winery, everything smelled faintly of oak barrels and something sweet. We tried three more wines; one was so peppery I had to ask for bread.

Lunch was back in the village — three courses, lots of laughter (and more wine). I tried to remember what each dish was called but honestly gave up after the second glass. The drive back to Valencia felt slow and sleepy in a good way. Sometimes I still think about that cool air in the caves or how Marta described her favorite bottle — she said you can taste the weather from that year if you pay attention. Maybe next time I’ll notice it too.
