You’ll be picked up in Sitges for an easy afternoon exploring two local wineries in Penedès with a small group. Taste traditional cava and regional wines straight from family cellars, snack on local bites, and hear stories from your guide that make each glass feel personal. It’s relaxed but quietly memorable—the kind of day you’ll want to tell friends about later.
The first thing I remember is the soft thud of shoes on gravel as we stepped out of the van—Penedès air felt warmer than Sitges, almost sweet. Our guide, Marta, waved us over with a grin and a Catalan “Bon dia!” She seemed to know every inch of these hills. The vines looked almost too green against the dusty road, and there was this faint scent—like bread baking but sharper, maybe from the cellars below. We were a small group, just six of us, which made it feel more like visiting someone’s home than a tour.
Inside the first winery, an old family place that’s been making cava for nine generations (Marta said she’d lost count of cousins), we tried to pronounce Macabeu and Xarel·lo. I definitely butchered them—got a laugh from Marta and even one of the owners. The cava itself was cold and bright; you could taste something floral underneath all those bubbles. There were little snacks on the table—almonds and something salty I still can’t name. I kept sneaking glances at the old photos on the walls, everyone in black-and-white holding glasses or grapes. It felt like time moved slower here.
The drive between wineries was short—maybe fifteen minutes?—but it was enough to see how quickly the light changed over the fields. At Can Lleó, we walked through rows of vines while our guide pointed out which grapes went into their white versus red wines. Someone asked if they ever get tired of tasting; Marta just smiled and said, “Never if you do it right.” There was a moment when everyone got quiet, just looking at sunlight through leaves. I didn’t expect that part to stick with me so much.
Your afternoon includes hotel pickup in Sitges by van, guided visits at two family-run Penedès wineries with tastings of local wines and cava, plus little snacks to go along with each glass before you’re brought back to town comfortably at sunset.
