Cook paella, taste cava, cycle through vineyards

A paella cooking class in Alt-Penedes combines hands-on instruction in four paella styles with a bike ride through Catalan vineyards and a tour of a nine-generation cava winery. Hotel pickup and drop-off from Sitges are included, along with one glass of cava or wine and the recipe to take home. The class runs 5 to 6 hours and suits all fitness levels; minimum age is 12.

The Experience

You get picked up at your hotel in Sitges and driven to Alt-Penedes, where the day starts at a nine-generation cava winery. You'll taste their wines and cavas—one glass is included—and tour the production space before heading out on bikes. The vineyard ride is around 10 km of easy cycling through the Catalan landscape, the kind of pace that lets you take in the rows of grapes without racing through them.

After the ride, the paella class begins. You choose which type you want to make: seafood with prawns and squid, meat with a mix of proteins, vegetarian with seasonal vegetables, or black paella made with squid ink and served with a garlic sauce. The guide walks you through the technique—the rice, the broth, the timing, the tricks that separate a proper paella from a mediocre one. You're cooking the whole time, not watching a demonstration. By the end, you eat what you made, and you leave with the recipe written down so you can make it at home.

The guide speaks English or Spanish. Bottled water and a bike with helmet are provided. Hotel pickup and drop-off from Sitges are included in the price, so you don't arrange transport separately.
