Climb through a hidden crevasse on the north face to reach breathtaking summit views

This 10-hour guided mountain hike from Valencia ascends El Penyagolosa, the highest peak in the Valencian Community, via a narrow north face channel that few hikers attempt. Starting with breakfast in Vistabella de Maestrazgo and a drive to the San Joan de Penyagolosa monastery, you follow the GR-7 trail around the mountain, then tackle the steep scramble up loose rock and the exposed canal between the two ridges. The descent winds through the Pegunta ravine alongside a river and forest. Climbing helmets and harness equipment are provided.

The experience

The route splits into two distinct sections: the approach and the challenge. You leave Valencia early, stop for breakfast in Vistabella de Maestrazgo, then drive to the monastery at San Joan de Penyagolosa where the hike begins. The first part follows the established GR-7 trail as it winds around the mountain's lower slopes, building into the terrain before the real ascent starts on the north side.

The north face channel is where the scramble begins: steep, loose rock and a narrow passage between the two ridges that form the Penyagolosa massif. This is not technical climbing, but it demands solid footwork and nerve on exposed terrain. Climbing helmets and harness equipment (where needed) are provided. On clear days, the summit opens to views across the entire province of Castellón and beyond, and this is where you'll stop for lunch.

The return follows the Pegunta ravine, a completely different landscape: a descent through dense forest with a river running alongside the trail. The full day takes 10 hours from start to finish, and you'll be back in Valencia by evening.

What’s included

  • Climbing helmets and harness equipment (if necessary).
  • coffee and tea at the start of the day.
