Market shopping, improvised menu, fire-cooked meal, and wine in one afternoon

A cooking class in Cordoba that starts at the city's main food market, where you shop for seasonal ingredients alongside your guide before cooking them together at Jugo Vinos Vivos, a natural wine bar near the market. You choose recipes based on what looks freshest, cook over fire, and eat the meal you've made with bottomless Spanish wine. The class runs 3.5 hours and includes all ingredients, materials, craft beer and olives.

The experience

The day begins at Corredera Food Market in Cordoba's historic center. You walk the stalls with your guide, tasting and selecting whatever catches your attention: the freshest fish, the best seasonal vegetables, whatever looks worth cooking. This is not a tour of the market. You're shopping like a local, stopping to taste new things, grabbing what appeals to you. Your guide, developed by Gabrielle Mangeri, a New York native who moved to Cordoba in 2010, knows which stalls have what and helps you think through the meal you'll build together. You make several stops on the way back to Jugo Vinos Vivos, the natural wine bar where the class happens, picking up everything you'll need.

Once at the wine bar, you cook what you've bought. The menu is not set in advance. It comes from what you chose at the market and what your guide thinks will work best. Starters might be salmorejo, revueltos, or grilled vegetables with a twist. The main could be paella, grilled fish, chorizo, or shrimp in garlic, depending on what looked freshest. Dessert stays simple: chocolate, fruit, strawberries with cream. You cook over fire, learning as you go, improvising as the ingredients guide you. Bottomless Spanish wine pours throughout the meal, and craft beer and table olives arrive during the class and after.

The whole experience (market, cooking, eating) takes 3.5 hours. All ingredients and materials are provided. The guide speaks English or Spanish. Jugo Vinos Vivos is wheelchair accessible, and public transportation runs nearby.

Is this one for you?The 3.5-hour class leaves room for another stop in Cordoba's center before or after, but it fills most of a free afternoon. Book it if you have a solid block of time and want to eat what you've made rather than visit another monument.
