The experience

Ever wondered what Barcelona looks like from the water at dusk? I hadn’t, not really, until we stepped onto this sailboat just as the city was starting to cool off. The air still smelled faintly salty and warm. You know that dry summer scent mixed with sunscreen and sea. Our guide, Marta, handed out chilled drinks right away (I went for cava, because when in Spain…), and someone tuned a guitar behind us. I caught myself grinning before we even left the harbor.

The city looked different from out there, softer maybe? We sailed past la Barceloneta and the W Hotel, with Marta pointing out little things I’d never noticed before: the way the Sagrada Familia’s towers catch that orange light, or how locals linger along Port Vell even after most tourists have wandered off. The guitarist played something slow and familiar. I didn’t recognize it but it made me want to stay quiet for a minute. There was this plate of jamón croquetas going around, honestly, I think I ate too many but who’s counting?

I tried to ask about one of the cheeses in my best Spanish (Marta laughed, apparently “queso de cabra” isn’t as hard as I made it sound). The sun dropped lower and people started snapping photos but mostly everyone just watched in this kind of hush. You could hear the waves more than voices for a bit. I still think about that view of Barcelona’s skyline melting into pinks and golds. It’s not something you can really photograph right.
