The experience

What happens in that first hour off the coast? The boat leaves Port Olímpic (the marina built for the 1992 Olympics that turned Barcelona back toward the sea), and you're on a modern sailing boat with a maximum of 9 people, which means actual room to move. The skipper handles the sail while you settle into soft cushions on the bow or in the cockpit, and the open bar starts immediately: beer, red and white wine, cava, Coca-Cola, Fanta lemon or water, as much as you want. The snacks are real: premium olives, fuet (the local sausage), quinoa crackers, chips, not an afterthought.

The boat stops for a short swim partway through, so bring a swimsuit if you want to go in. The water is the Mediterranean, and on clear days the Barcelona skyline stays visible from the water. If you're lucky, dolphins or whales show up. The skipper will know if conditions are right. The whole thing runs 60 minutes, which is enough time to feel like you've left the city without eating up your whole afternoon.

Three departures run every day: 9:30am, 1:30pm and 5:30pm. The skipper speaks English, Spanish, German and Dutch. A minimum of 2 people is required to sail, and infants sit on an adult's lap. Public transport gets you to Port Olímpic easily if you don't have a car.
