The Experience

“You see that gold fish?” our skipper grinned, pointing past the two towers at Port Olímpic. I squinted — it really does look like a giant shimmering fish, just sitting there between the buildings. We’d barely left the dock and already I was half-laughing at how different Barcelona feels from the water. The sails went up with this soft snap (I didn’t expect it to be so quiet), and suddenly the city was behind us, all glass and pale stone in the sun. Someone passed me a cold drink — I think it was cava? — and honestly, that first sip tasted like relief after walking around all morning.

As we drifted along Barceloneta beach, our guide started pointing out bits of the skyline: Montjuïc Castle way off to one side, W Hotel just catching the light. The breeze was salty and you could hear music floating over from somewhere on shore — or maybe it was just someone’s phone on board, hard to tell. Snacks came around (olives, chips, nothing fancy but somehow perfect), and everyone sort of settled into their own little bubble for a minute. I caught myself staring back at the city thinking how small it looked from out here. Not sure why that surprised me.

The best view? When we glided by Maremagnum and saw the drawbridge open for a big cargo ship — felt like we were getting away with something. Our skipper told stories about the Olympic Games and how they built all this; his accent made me smile. He laughed when I tried to say “Montjuïc” right (definitely didn’t). By the end I was sun-warmed and a little salty, hair tangled from wind, wishing we could just keep drifting out past Barcelona for hours. There’s something about being out there that sticks with you longer than you expect.
