itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Tapas workshop with local chef

  • Arrive at tapas workshop
  • Receive lemonade or champagne
  • Meet chef Alfonso
  • View and learn about ingredients
  • Cook tapas step by step
  • Enjoy tapas on terrace
  • Receive recipes by email

I almost rang the wrong doorbell—classic me—because all those old Barceloneta buildings look similar from the street. But then Alfonso leaned out over his balcony waving, apron already on, and called down in Spanish, so I knew I was in the right place. The stairway smelled faintly of garlic and something sweet, maybe citrus. It was already warm inside, but not stuffy—just that lived-in kitchen warmth you only get when someone’s been prepping since early morning.

Alfonso greeted us with lemonade (he said it’s his grandmother’s recipe) and a glass of cava if you wanted it. He laughed when I tried to pronounce “escalivada”—I probably butchered it—and then laid out all these beautiful ingredients from the market: tomatoes that actually smelled like tomatoes, plump olives, fresh anchovies. He explained each tapa slowly, showing us how to slice things just so. There was this moment when everyone got quiet while we were frying croquetas together—the oil popping softly and the sun coming through the terrace window—and I realized how different it felt to cook here than at home.

The best part for me was sitting out on the terrace after we finished cooking, plates spread out between potted plants and city rooftops stretching away behind us. You could hear distant scooters and someone playing guitar a few floors below. Alfonso poured sangria (generous with the fruit) and told stories about growing up in this neighborhood—how his family always argued about whose tortilla recipe was best. We swapped phone numbers with another couple from Berlin; I still think about that view sometimes when I make pan con tomate back home.
