The temple sits at the base of the mountain; Seokguram Grotto sits higher up, a smaller stone chamber built as a companion piece. According to the historical record, Kim Dae-Seong built Bulguksa for his living parents and Seokguram for the parents from his former life.

The Gyeongju National Museum closes out the afternoon with a walk through the Silla History Gallery and Silla Art Gallery, where you see bronze vessels, ceramics, jewelry and weapons that belonged to the kingdom. The museum opened in 1964 and was recently renovated. The full day runs seven to eight hours, including the train ride both ways, and ends with the return KTX to Seoul.
