The Experience

We were already rolling north out of Seoul before I’d finished my coffee — the city fading and fields taking over. Our guide, Min, kept pointing things out through the bus window (her voice had that calm energy you get from someone who’s done this a hundred times but still cares). When we pulled up at Imjingak Park, there was this weird quiet under the grey sky, except for some kids running near old tanks and rusted artillery. I touched one of the shells — cold and rough — and tried to imagine what it sounded like here seventy years ago. Couldn’t really.

At Freedom Bridge, Min told us about the POWs who crossed back after the war. I didn’t expect to feel much but standing there, with all those colorful ribbons tied to the fence, it got to me a bit. There was a smell of wet grass and river mud — not unpleasant, just real. The DMZ tour kept moving; we ducked into the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel next (hard hats on). It’s steep and narrow down there; you can hear your own breath echoing off the stone. Someone in our group joked about getting stuck but honestly I was too focused on not slipping.

The DMZ exhibition hall had photos that made me stop and stare longer than I thought I would. Then up at Dora Observatory — binoculars pressed to my face — I squinted across at Kijongdong in North Korea. It looked so close but impossibly far at the same time. Min described daily life over there; she laughed when I tried repeating “soybean milk” in Korean (I definitely butchered it). On the way back, we passed Dorasan Station and Unification Village — just glimpses really, but enough to make you wonder what could change here someday.
