The Experience
I’ll admit, I was a little nervous when our van pulled up to Imjingak Park—there’s this weird mix of peace signs and barbed wire everywhere. Our guide, Min, had already cracked a joke about “not defecting today,” which helped. The air smelled faintly metallic, like train tracks after rain. We followed her through the park past the Freedom Bridge—kids were running around but you could feel something heavy in the air. I kept glancing at that derailed locomotive; it’s just sitting there rusting, kind of a monument to things not moving forward.
The real moment for me was crawling down into the Third Tunnel. It’s narrow and damp—watch your head if you’re tall—and Min explained how North Korean soldiers dug it by hand (she even pointed out some old dynamite marks). It’s only a short walk but I felt my heart thumping a bit faster than usual. Then suddenly we were at Dora Observatory, squinting through binoculars at North Korea. You can actually see people moving around in that propaganda village. I tried to imagine what their lives are like over there—honestly gave me chills.
Lunch was this sizzling beef bulgogi at a spot Min swears is “famous with taxi drivers.” She laughed when I tried to order tofu in Korean (definitely butchered it). Afterward we had an option for a quick hike up Mt. Gamaksan to cross that suspension bridge—just ten minutes but my legs were still wobbly from the tunnel. The wind up there felt sharp and clean though, and you could see all the way back toward Seoul if you squinted against the sun.
On the drive back I kept thinking about how close everything is—Seoul feels so normal until you’re standing at that border looking north. This private DMZ tour isn’t really comfortable or easy in the way sightseeing usually is, but maybe that’s why it sticks with me.
What’s included
Your day includes hotel pickup and dropoff in Seoul, entry fees to all main sites like Imjingak Park and the Third Tunnel of Aggression, air-conditioned transport with an English-speaking guide who knows their stuff (and plenty of stories), plus lunch at a local restaurant—bulgogi or tofu if you ask ahead.
