The Experience
The morning didn’t start as planned: my old sneakers were still damp from yesterday’s rain, so I squelched into the open vehicle with slightly cold toes. Our guide, Sipho, noticed and grinned, “First time in Kragga Kamma?” I nodded, trying to act casual but honestly just hoping my socks would dry in the sun. The park was already humming: birds everywhere and that earthy smell after rain, like wet grass mixed with dust. We rolled out right at 10am, the air still cool enough to make me zip up my jacket.
Sipho had this calm way of pointing things out without making it feel like a lecture. He slowed for a group of zebra crossing the track (I know everyone says they look like horses in pajamas but honestly, up close they’re much more serious). Then suddenly: buffalo, just there by the acacias, chewing and watching us back. I tried to get a photo but fumbled with my camera strap. Sipho just laughed and said, “They’re patient.” There was this moment when we stopped near a small pond and everything went quiet except for some distant bird calls. I remember thinking how odd it felt to be so close to animals you usually only see on TV.
We saw rhino too (massive and somehow gentle-looking), and even spotted cheetahs lounging under a tree like they owned the place (which, maybe they do). The whole drive was about two hours but it felt both longer and shorter at once. I kept forgetting to use my binoculars because there was always something happening right next to us. The sun finally came out halfway through and dried my shoes a bit. Afterward I grabbed a Coke from the little restaurant by the entrance.
