The experience
Five hours gets you from the Port Elizabeth waterfront to the interior of Kragga Kamma Game Reserve. The tour opens at Cape Recife Nature Reserve, where you stop at the lighthouse and watch African Jackass Penguins in their natural habitat against the backdrop of the Port Elizabeth coastline. From there, the route follows the shore eastward, a scenic drive that frames the city's geography before turning inland toward the reserve.
At Kragga Kamma, a guide leads the game drive through the reserve where three of the Big 5 species live alongside zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and other animals. The safari happens by vehicle, so you observe from a seat rather than on foot. After the drive, you stop at the reserve restaurant for a light lunch around 1 p.m. The meal is optional and costs extra if you choose it. The tour is built for cruise passengers with limited time in port, and pickup is included in the booking.
An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group, and a live English-speaking guide narrates both the coastal section and the game drive. The pace is steady rather than rushed, though five hours means you move between stops without lingering. Children from age 3 travel at the same rate as adults, and the itinerary suits all fitness levels, though the game drive involves sitting for an extended period.
